Settled in the fall of 1872, Primghar is derived from an acronym of the names of the eight early settlers who laid out the town. In December of 1887 the court was petitioned to incorporate 360 acres as Primghar. On February 14, 1888 in a 57 to 47 vote the City of Primghar was incorporated and thereafter became a municipality.

In August of 2013, Primghar celebrated its Quasquicentennial, also known as the 125th anniversary. Since then and even before, Primghar continues to expand and evolve into what you see today.
