Legal Operation of Snowmobiles:
• Areas of operation.
For safety purposes, it is recommended that snowmobiles be operated on
private property
with the landowner’s permission or on trails designed
by the DNR for the operation of
snowmobiles. Most state parks and

or highway.
A snowmobile may cross a street or highway (except interstate highways,
freeways and
limited-access highways) provided the crossing is made at
an angle of approximately 90
degrees to the direction of the highway, at

Persons ages 12 through 17 shall not operate a snowmobile on designated
public land or
ice or land purchased with snowmobile registration
funds in this state without first
obtaining a valid safety certificate

regulations. It is unlawful for any person to drive or operate any snowmobile:
- On public land without a measurable snow cover.
- At a rate of speed greater than reasonable or
proper under all existing circumstances.
- In a careless, reckless or negligent manner, so
as to endanger the person or property
of another, or cause injury or

accidents.
If a snowmobile is involved in an accident resulting in injury or
death to anyone or property
damage amounting to $1,000 or more, either
